We live in interesting times. The US federal government has fallen largely under the control of the proto-fascist insurgency which attempted to overthrow it on 6 January 2021. Donald Trump is back in The White House, the Republicans have taken both The Senate and The House of Representatives, the judicial branch is overrun by Trump-appointed judges and can likely not be trusted to conduct the duties for which the people depend upon it, and nobody has done much of anything to stop any of this. They are eager to pull down what shreds of a social safety-net the nation has ever had, enthusiastic to dismantle protections around civil rights, and clearly very good at acquiring and holding political power. They are proverbial fonts of poor policy, and have no care for the social and economic disaster which will inevitably come from that policy.
As you may recall, in January 2025, Donald Trump decided to tariff the world. Why not. Mexico will surely pay for it, right? In so doing, he angered our friends to the north so greatly that, while the tariffs were set to be implemented, Canadians began to organize countermeasures targeted, where it was practical, at businesses in red states. Canada has shown us the obvious way forward, and we should not just leave it to the Canadians. Whatever may happen with tariffs, we should all follow their example. Why should you, if you can avoid it, spend money with a business headquartered in a Republican-controlled state, where it may eventually end up paying to send another Republican to Congress, to pass laws that systematically attack the most vulnerable among us? Why take the substantial risk that your money will end up funding these Republicans and the voters who are ultimately responsible for electing them? Spend it instead with people who do not wish to do you harm.
That's it. That's the project. Join us: Try not to buy goods and services from fascists. Ask others to do the same.
It will not always be feasible. This is not a religion and you are not expected to go without necessities when you can not find a supplier with morals. Just do what you can to give every dollar to better people, so that the hard times to come are harder on the architects of those difficult times, and easier on the rest of us.
What to avoid: Can we track modern fascism?
Take a look at the MAGABase.
It's a tool to keep track of problem organizations. It is a work in progress, still rough around the edges and sparse of data. We intend for it to eventually contain every organization which is likely to leak money to the fascist cause, along with notes on why and how this might happen. We could use help adding data to it. If you've recently dealt with a business, or are considering buying from a business, and you find that they're headquartered in a red state, or that they've associated themselves in some way with Trump and friends, please add them. If you have a list of organizations you're boycotting because they are too friendly with the fascists, add them. If you see an advertisement somewhere for an anti-"woke" organization which is loud and stupid in the obvious way and has a name like Patriot LLC or some such thing, definitely add them. We encourage submissions from the general public, but at least for the moment data is subject to manual review before it's used, so there will be some delay between the time it is submitted and the time it is approved. Any information you can share means a great deal, and of course, help spread the word: Don't give money to fascists.
Do you need the MAGABase data? Since the data is being crowd-sourced, we consider the contents of the database to be property of the community. A current dump of the database should always be available here. Please do some good with it.
